The Grounds

The grounds of the McFaddin-Ward House are based on concepts by Mamie
McFaddin Ward and developed by Dr. Neil Oldenwald of Lousiana State
University. There are 40,000 sq. ft. of lawn and 20,000 sq. ft. of formal
and informal beds.
The two Live Oaks that grace the west side of the
property are members of the Louisiana Live Oak Society. Planted from acorns
gathered by William McFaddin at the San Jacinto battlefield ca. 1870, the
mammoth trees have limb spreads in excess of 140 ft.
The formal rose garden is always an attraction to
visitors and passersby alike, particularly during the two annual flushes in
mid-April and early November.
