( v i r t u a l t o u r ) Expansive porches, such as the one at the McFaddin home, provided people not only with a covered area in which to relax and socialize, but also an opportunity to increase the outward size of their home. With its massive double Ionic columns and porch-lined colonnade, the house was located just off fashionable Calder Avenue and could easily be seen from the street. After 1920, the McFaddins enclosed part of the porch on the east side of the house to make a sun room.
The porch area also includes a porte-cochere, which protected family and
guests from the elements when entering or exiting their vehicles |
